Definitely had to do a double-take when I saw that Paizo was releasing a new edition of Pathfinder. Not sure how to process the information yet. I’m reading over the FAQ, and I’m supremely interested as to where this might go.
I don’t know what to think. I have so many questions. Pathfinder is one of the games that I play the most. I feel weird about this announcement. On one hand, I’d love to dive into new material. On the other hand, I’ve grown accustomed to Pathfinder’s warts, and love it just the same. I’m just so conflicted.
One thing I’m intrigued by is how they’ll support the 1st Edition. It says they won’t be releasing new material for it, but hmmm… because they also will leave PDF versions up for sale, and some of the core books will stay in print. In addition, they’ll let 3rd parties continue to create material for the 1st Edition. It sounds like Paizo isn’t closing the door on the 1st Edition, but basically letting it exist in a completely hands off capacity.
Another thing I’m intrigued by is how they plan on simplifying the game. The freakish amount of bonuses available always seemed to me to be overkill, although not everyone agreed. I’m very interested to see exactly how they plan on streamlining the game. This also has the smell of a real push towards creating original content. Not sure exactly what the final product will do in this respect.
Obviously, there’s a lot to be curious about here. The birth of Pathfinder was somewhat controversial. The birth of Pathfinder 2.0 should be an intriguing creation. I’m really looking forward to it, but I have no intention of giving up on 1st Edition.
